An interior courtyard brought back to standard

Interior courtyards get looked at more closely than anything on the street, and they are usually maintained the least.

This one is enclosed on all sides, so every resident passing through sees the beds from a few feet away. At that distance, weeds and a blurred edge are obvious.

What we did

Beds were cleared, re-bordered with stone and refilled with clean gravel in two tones to separate the walkway edge from the planting. Bromeliads were set individually, each with room to color up properly rather than being packed in for instant coverage.

Existing plants worth keeping stayed, including the crotons and the palms that give the courtyard its shade. Turf around the central lawn was tidied back to the bed lines.

Afterwards

Enclosed courtyards trap heat and humidity, so growth is quick and the maintenance interval matters more here than out front. This one is checked on every visit.
